Editorial Board

Editorial board changes

Only three editorial board members completed their terms as of the Editorial Board meeting at the January 2004 STS Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, but the three have carried heavy loads and made strong contributions to The Annals. We sincerely thank Tom R. Karl (10 years), Irving L. Kron (9 years) and Keith S. Naunheim (9 years) for all the energy and expertise that they gave to The Annals. The Annals is better because of them and all three will be missed.

One new member, who adds expertise in statistics, was appointed at the January meeting: William N. Anderson, PhD, Consultant, Lake Forest, California. Dr. Anderson's duties will focus on statistical reviews of original articles. Six members were appointed the previous year, five of whom were announced in the May 2003 issue (see Editorial Board Changes. Ann Thorac Surg 2003;75:1365). The sixth member to start his term in 2003 is Ryosuke Tsuchiya, MD, Deputy Director, Division of Thoracic Surgery, National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

In light of the rising rate of submissions to The Annals, the STS Board of Directors has approved the expansion of the Editorial Board to 60 members to handle the increased workload. Nominees will be given to the Board of Directors at the April meeting.

In addition, in January, the roles of the Associate Editors were redefined and the number of Associate Editors was reduced from 10 to five. Doctor Juan Rosai, who has done a superb job as Surgical Pathology Editor, was made a regular member of the Editorial Board. The office of Internet Editor was transferred to CTSNet; the editorial office will continue to supply content to the Internet Editor for posting on CTSNet. The Associate Editor positions for feature articles were abolished and will be transferred to a new category of editorial board membership, Feature Editors. The remaining Associate Editors are Statistics, Ethics, Reviews, Key References and Surgical Heritage.

The Editor, Managing Editor, and entire staff of the editorial office thank our retired Board members and welcome the new members to The Annals. We thank all Editorial Board members and all guest reviewers for their contributions to the scholarly life of our profession.
