New feature: images in cardiothoracic surgery

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery is pleased to announce the inauguration of an exciting new feature, "Images in Cardiothoracic Surgery." Each month we will present images relating to any aspect of cardiothoracic surgery, in the broadest sense, or any visual display that touches a reader’s life (do you have a sunset that evokes memories for you?). We invite you to submit unusual, interesting, dramatic, and/or instructive photos, drawings, or computer graphics in any format, including audio and video files. How can this be, you say? Because, although "Images in Cardiothoracic Surgery" is considered a single feature for both the print and the Internet versions of The Annals, the content display will vary, depending on which medium is best suited for that image. The idea is that the image will tell the story, but a single paragraph commentary and a title may be included.

The best news is that there are separate section editors for the print and the Net versions, so that you need not worry as to which medium to send your contribution. The Section Chief for Print contributions is Dr Lars Svensson, presently a member of The Annals Editorial Board, who as an Associate Editor will be responsible for this Section. The Section Chief for the Net version is Associate Editor Dr Tom Karl, already known to you as The Annals Internet Editor. All content submitted for the Images page will be reviewed by both Lars and Tom, and they will decide on the display most appropriate for the particular medium. Example: you submit an interesting case (yes, this section is ideal for brief case reports) where the "whole story" is shown in an echocardiogram video clip. For the print version, you send in glossy prints showing the detail you wish to display, and for the Net version you submit the video clip. If selected, your Image will be carried in both the print and Net versions, probably although not necessarily in the same monthly issue. There will be some subjects that are clearly best suited for one medium or the other, and so will appear only in that version. This will be a decision for you, the submitter, and Lars and Tom to decide. However, we will make certain that every image published in only one medium is noted in the other medium, so that the reader has the opportunity to appreciate both.

This is an exciting venture designed, where appropriate, to extend the educational capabilities beyond the limits of the printed page. As this is a new and therefore a somewhat experimental feature, there are no fixed rules governing what may be submitted, so please use your imagination. Examples include: diagnostic images (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound), intraoperative images, original artwork, case reports, historical photographs, almost anything directly or peripherally related to the specialty (including that sunset). Submissions may be sent to The Annals Editorial Office, or preferably directly to either Section Editor, Lars Svensson or Tom Karl, with full assurance that all material will be reviewed by both. Their addresses appear on the Editorial Board page of each monthly issue of The Annals.

We have some interesting "starter" images in the pipeline, but we are anxious that within a short time this will become your Section. So send that Image in soon!
