Curative resection for large central bronchogenic tumors may require
radical or intrapericardial pneumonectomy. Myocardial herniation through
the pericardial defect is a rare early postoperative complication.
Prevention of cardiac herniation and subsequent hemodynamic compromise is
always necessary after intrapericardial pneumonectomy.
