Right ventricular failure following cardiac surgery must be rapidly
diagnosed and treated to minimize injury to the heart. Switching from
aortic to pulmonary artery perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass is a
method of rapidly testing the adequacy of right ventricular function and
supporting the ventricle if necessary. A centrifugal pump has been used for
long-term support for two cases managed in this manner.
